Your Guide to The Best Hiking Trails on Long Island’s North Fork

  1. Orient Point County Park, Orient

Orient Point County Park is located on the north side of Route 25 across from the Orient Point ferry. The hiking trail offers a one mile loop along a gorgeous beach that leads to the infamous Orient Point. Keep on the lookout for seals, birds, various plants, and other types of fascinating wildlife. Along the trail, you will experience pristine views of the Long Island Sound and the mysterious Plum Island. If you’re looking to stand on the very edge of Long Island’s North Fork, then this is the trail to take!

2. Horton’s Point Lighthouse, Southold

Above the 112 steps from the Long Island Sound, there is a breathtaking view of sun, water, and sand. Not only does Horton’s Point Lighthouse serve as a fascinating historic nautical museum, but there is a trail on the property that takes you through the trees and steps that lead to miles of rocky beach. If you’re feeling tired after those steps, take in the breathtaking scenery of the Long Island Sound. Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall, this trail always has it all.

3. Hallock State Park Preserve, Riverhead

Hallock State Park Preserve is a 225-acre state park and nature preserve nestled along Long Island’s North Fork. Its various trails consist of diverse surroundings of nature and lead to beach views of the Long Island Sound. The particular mile-long trail to the beach includes easily walkable terrain with woods alongside. If you are looking to explore a variety of trails in one park, this is your spot.

4. Mashomack Preserve, Shelter Island

Just a ferry ride away from Long Island’s North Fork stands the infamous Shelter Island. Shelter Island’s Mashomack Preserve is home to 11 miles of coastline along with acres of woodlands, creeks, and fields. If you are on the lookout for some birdwatching, a rocky terrain, or hoping to connect with nature, Mashomack Preserve hiking trails will never fail to bring you these wonders.

5. Breakwater Beach, Mattituck

Located on the west side of Mattituck inlet is a beach with some of the most stunning sunsets on the North Fork. If you are looking for a calming sunset walk, Breakwater Beach is a perfect starting point for your walk. You can choose to walk beyond the beach and towards the stunning cliffs, or take the shorter route and walk the shore and back. Whatever you decide, your sunset hike will be well worth the walk!
