Spent too much time in the sun today? Is your skin feeling dehydrated? Apply this spectacular succulent on your sunburn!
Aloe Vera is a succulent plant species native to the Arabian Peninsula. In the United States, this plant is considered an invasive species, yet it offers numerous health benefits to our skincare. This plant is beneficial for many purposes. For instance, the cosmetic, food, and pharmaceutical industries all utilize Aloe Vera’s healing properties to create their booming businesses.
This plant is mainly significant for the healing properties associated with its gel’s topical use. The Aloe vera gel contains most of the beneficial bioactive compounds in the plant, “including vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants.”1 These compounds aid in healing the skin through antibacterial, antiviral, and antiseptic properties. It is commonly used as a topical treatment that you rub into the skin. Its long history in treating sunburns has evolved over time to consumer products like lotions and moisturizers. Check your moisturizer! Aloe Vera might already be an ingredient in it.
Experimental studies have displayed that Aloe Vera can reduce sunburns by around 9 days compared with conventional types of medication.2 As always, before topical use, consult your doctor if your sunburn is extremely high grade or if you are at risk for sun poisoning.
The most efficient way to treat your sunburn with Aloe Vera is by slicing the leaf open and rubbing the gel onto your skin. You could also blend the Aloe Vera gel in a blender to apply as a moisturizer with a brush or your hands. It is best to apply Aloe Vera’s gel once you are out of the sun and notice your sunburn. Hopefully, you do not experience any harsh sunburns this summer! Always make sure to apply your sunscreen before going out in the sun! Enjoy your summer activities.
