Embracing the cold: Your guide to winter fashion

By: Libby Solleder

The winter can be dreary, depressing, and boring, but that does NOT mean your outfits have to be! There is nothing like a cute outfit to turn your cloudy mood into the best day ever.

Winter Staples:

  1. Matching sweat seats (ex: Amazon, Zara, White Fox, Aritzia)

Every morning my alarm goes off and I heavily consider going to class in my pajamas so I can stay cozy all day long and beat the frigid cold. Matching sweat sets are a total game-changer. You feel like you’re in your pajamas but look like a million bucks!

  1. Loose jeans

Skinny jeans are out and comfortable jeans are in…and thank goodness for it! So, go grab those wide-leg jeans from the attic and bring them down because they are the perfect combination of cute and comfy.

  1. Chunky sweaters/turtlenecks

If you are anything like me, growing up I would throw a fit of hysterics any time I was forced to wear a turtleneck. Now I’m twenty, and I challenge myself every day to NOT put a turtleneck on, or any chunky sweater for that matter. They are just so cozy and cute! Last week I had a job interview and wore my favorite black turtleneck with puffy sleeves, work slacks, and booties. Right after the interview, I took off the work slacks and booties and opted for low-rise jeans and sneakers for a casual dinner with friends. Chunky sweaters are definitely a staple for this winter season.

  1. Ballet flats

Ballet flats ballet flats ballet flats. They are so pretty. They are so versatile. They are so comfy. You need a pair, your mother needs a pair, your bestie needs a pair, and your dog needs a pair! Some girls may have trauma from having to put them on for fancy events as a child, but they are back, and this time, better than ever! A classic understated black, navy, or gray flat is a great way to make your outfit pop. Or, you could go bold with a solid red, silver, gold, (or whatever your favorite color is) to spruce up a more plain outfit!

Extra Touches:

  1. Hair accessories

Hair accessories are a great way to add an extra element to your overall look. Berets are a great move because they keep the hair out of your face but still permit you to wear your hair down! Mini berets are especially stylish because they are a simple, understated way of pulling off an everyday look. Ribbons are another choice of hair accessories to change your outfit from drab to fab—especially if you tie them into a bow! Thick cotton headbands are also a chic look. They pull the hair out of your face, making you look brighter. I recommend adding a cute earring such as a thick, small hoop, or another statement earring of your choosing. This jewelry will add a touch of sparkle since your hair won’t be covering your ears.

  1. Hats, earmuffs, vests, and scarves

These staples are not only a sensible way to stay warm, but a great way to up your outfit game. For days when it’s not quite cold enough for a jacket, opt for the vest instead! It’s great to keep some basic colors in the back of your closet so they can go with whatever you’re wearing underneath. The same goes for scarves. Choose one that is a fun color to add another element to your outfit. Baseball hats and bucket hats are also fabulous accessories to spice up your outfit. These hats protect you from the winter weather, they can hide a bad hair day, AND they are super cute!!!!

So, dive into your winter closet and embrace the cold this winter with style.
